TechSmart is a Seattle, WA based EdTech software company that is reinventing the way coding & software development is taught in schools. We partner with school districts to provide Teacher Coding Bootcamp professional learning, a 3rd-12th grade curriculum pathway, and a cloud-based Teaching & Learning Platform. We are looking for a highly-analytical Saas expert with a strong financial planning & analysis background to join our leadership team as the Director of Finance and Accounting. In this role you will oversee our company’s financial planning and accounting operations and be a trusted partner and advisor to the CEO on all things Finance related - from implementing finance rigor and process to building our projections to giving insight into how the business is performing, and how to strategically drive more value.

As TechSmart’s first Finance hire, you will be expected to roll up your sleeves and build the processes and your team, working closely with stakeholders to navigate current business needs while proactively planning for the future. We are seeking a dynamic operator, strategist, and educator who will be the voice of all things finance while driving the growth of our organization.

Responsibilities

  • Transition all general accounting functions from an outsourced provider to internal model. Oversee accounting operations, to include cash management/reconciliation, accounts receivable, accounts payable, payroll, financial reporting , balance sheet management, to ensure best practices. Implement accounting standards as necessary. Optimize our current financial stack using technology alongside implementing the right processes based on technology - from revenue recognition to accounting to reporting.
  • Perform strategic financial planning & analysis, to include building and maintaining a detailed financial model and SaaS dashboard with relevant KPIs. Preparing detailed reports on the company’s financial performance. Utilize data and metrics from across the company to understand the business as a whole and communicate this information proactively to the leadership team.
  • Partner with the CEO and leadership team to develop, deliver and maintain budgets and advise on compensation. Perform monthly variance analysis focused on actuals vs budgets vs constantly evolving forecasts.
  • Provide strategic finance advice to the CEO based on SaaS KPIs, budgets, forecasts on how well the business is growing, how we benchmark with other SaaS peers, how/where to invest. Connect analytical findings to broader business/ industry understanding, drawing on past experience and pattern recognition.
  • Partner with the CEO on Board of Director relations, to include preparing data and analytics, compiling financial reports, helping to prepare board decks and attending board meetings.
  • Oversee and coordinate with external financial entities (accounting, tax, banks, etc) on behalf of the company.
  • Ensuring the company is in compliance with state and federal regulations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or related field. CPA or CFA certification is a bonus.
  • 5+ years experience working in FP&A and/or strategic finance for technology companies in a growth startup environment (Series A, B, C). You have been part of a similar team that has scaled from $2M+ in ARR to >$10M in ARR.
  • Deep understanding of SaaS metrics and SaaS accounting processes.
  • In-depth knowledge of accounting software (NetSuite preferred), corporate principals, and financial analysis.
  • An analytical mindset with the ability to breakdown and communicate financial findings and results to a variety of audiences.
  • Ability to think strategically while also being able to jump into the weeds and get your hands dirty when needed.
  • Highly organized and obsessed with attention to detail
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with experience influencing and educating cross-functional teams and stakeholders.
  • Automation mindset - you like creating scalable systems and automating routine processes across finance and accounting workflows.
